Jazzy Polka Party

Jazzy Polka Party

Jazzy Polka Party
July 2014

This pattern is called Southern Comfort, by Jean Ann Wright. The fabric I used is predominantly pink polka dots, and so I named the quilt for a sweet girl I know who loves her pink polka dots! The shocky, hot pink and yellow flower fabric were new, but everything else were leftover fabric pieces from Granny and Edith. The green may look familiar, as this is the sheet fabric I used in my favorite Lemon Lime Twist quilt that is featured on the banner image on my blog. Jazzy Polka Party was donated to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in August 2014. The quilt donations I make to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services are actually handled through the Children’s Services Auxiliary of Ventura County.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

take me out to the ball game pinwheel quilt

Take Me Out to the Ball Game
June 2014

This is the pinwheel pattern. For the red pinwheels, I used a fabric that has baseballs on it, and the blue pinwheels are red and blue stars on a white background. Both these fabrics were new acquisitions, while the solid red, white and blues were all leftover pieces of past project fabrics from Mom, Granny and Edith.

As I am making a quilt, I will try to come up with a name for it. This one felt so much like baseball and Americana – with the baseball fabric along with the red, white and blue colors –  it seemed fitting to name it, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, in honor of the famous old-time baseball song.

I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in July 2014.

Lavender Ladies

Garden Squares quilt

Lavender Ladies
April 2014

This quilt is the Garden Squares pattern, by Jean Ann Wright. Most of the lavender fabrics were acquired from Edith and Granny. Both of these wonderful ladies loved the color lavender, so I dedicate this quilt to them, the Lavender Ladies!

I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in July 2014.

Switchbacks

Rail Fence Quilt

Switchbacks
March 2014

This quilt is the Rail Fence pattern. This is another pattern that I would recommend for someone new to quilting, since it has few intersecting seams.

Aside from sewing, my other two passions are sailing and backpacking. This pattern reminds me a lot of switchbacks on a trail, hence the name Switchbacks. I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in March 2014.

Cotton Candy

Confused Cupid quilt

Cotton Candy
February 2014

This quilt is the Confused Cupid pattern. If you are new to quilting, I would recommend this pattern. It has very few seams that line-up, which makes it nice for someone just starting out. I used one of Granny’s hankies in the center of the quilt, that is of some sweet little pink embroidered flowers (shown in detail in upper right corner). I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in March 2014.

Bumble Bee

Irish Chain Bumble Bee quilt

Bumble Bee
November 2013

I came across a few quilt blocks in some of my Mom’s stuff, and decided to copy the pattern for Bumble Bee. What I didn’t realize when looking at the single block, is that it was actually just an Irish Chain pattern.

The yellow fabric and the fleece backing is such a bright yellow that I also considered using the name “Burnt Retinas”, or “Won’t Get Much Sleep” for it, since it is very, very bright.

I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in December 2013.

Check This!

Check This!
October 2013

For me, patterns and ideas for quilts come from just about anywhere I can find them. The pattern I used for my Check This! quilt was a picture of a quilt that was in my local fabric store’s weekly flyer. I had a lot of checkered fabrics and some homespun plaids that I wanted to use, and this pattern was well suited for them. Much of the fabric was from a bag of material I acquired from someone’s kind, free posting on craigslist.

I donated Check This! to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in December 2013.

Yellow Lava Pinwheels

Yellow-Lava-Pinwheels

Yellow Lava Pinwheels
September 2013

Here is another quilt where I bought some new fabric that I just couldn’t resist! The tropical flower fabric is a new fabric, while the yellow and pink fabric used for the pinwheels is left over fabric, mostly from Paul’s Mom. I used red fabric from the shorts she wanted me to incorporate into a quilt, so now the shorts are in two quilts: this one and Who Let the Dogs Out. The shorts were really a skort, that were blue on one half and red on the other. The red fabric from the skort is in the red pinwheel, shown in the picture where the upper left corner is folded back.

I donated this quilt to the County of Ventura, Children & Family Services, in October 2013.
